University of Colorado gynecologic oncologist Dr. Saketh Guntupalli recently published the book Sex and Cancer. He spoke with Denver 7 about the nearly 600,000 women who suffer from sexual dysfunction after cancer. He also addressed how that can come with a loss of a relationship that can be critical at such an already stressful time.

The challenges of sex after cancer
Anne Shelley shared her story about the intimate struggles many couples face after cancer.
Her story is also featured in Dr. Guntupalli‘s new book Sex and Cancer. He says a large study at UCHealth found 70 percent of women who were treated for gynecologic cancer had sexual dysfunction afterwards. The doctor also found a large percentage of the women ended up in couples therapy.
There is hope. There are things that you can do to prevent sexual dysfunction after a diagnosis of cancer, and there are really ways to build and make your relationship stronger.

Dr. Guntupalli talked with 5280 magazine about his 2015 study on the effect cancer treatments have on a women’s sexual health. This study is also shared in his new book Sex and Cancer.
One of his patients, Anne Shelley, is featured in the book, and shared with the magazine her cancer experience, including the changes in her relationship with her husband.
Only about 10 to 15 percent of physicians approach patients about sexual dysfunction at all, whether they have cancer or not.
